80 Mile Beach Western Australia

Eighty Mile Beach, Western Australia

This is a stunning, remote coastal stretch located between Port Hedland and Broome. It is a pristine shoreline and a haven for birdwatchers, fishermen and those seeking a peaceful retreat.

  • Location: Eighty Mile Beach is about 350 kilometers south of Broome and 250 kilometers north of Port Hedland.
  • Access: The only access point is via the Great Northern Highway. A turn-off near Pardoo Roadhouse leads you to Eighty Mile Beach, which is a well maintained gravel road taking you directly to the beach.
  • Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park: The most popular camping spot on this part of the coast.
    • Facilities: Powered and unpowered sites, amenities block with hot showers and toilets, laundry facilities, a camp kitchen and a small shop.
    • Booking: It is strongly advisable to book ahead a few days before you arrive, especially during the peak season ('The Dry', May to September).

Activities

  1. Fishing: Renowned for its excellent fishing, you can catch species such as threadfin salmon, blue salmon, and mulloway. Be mindful of tides and local regulations.
  2. Beachcombing: The long stretches of beach are perfect for leisurely walks and beachcombing. Shell collectors will find a huge variety of shells scattered along the shore.
  3. Bird Watching: The beach is a feeding place for migratory wading shorebirds. Birdwatchers can spot species like Red Capped Plovers, Terek Sandpipers and Red Knots.
  4. Sunsets: The white beach provides stunning views of the sunset over the Indian Ocean. 
  5. Four-Wheeldriving: Parts of the beach are accessible by 4WD, allowing for further exploration. Ensure you are aware of tide times and have the appropriate permits if required.

Wildlife

  • Marine Life: The waters off Eighty Mile Beach are part of a marine protected area. Visitors might spot dolphins, dugongs and even sea turtles.
  • Conservation: The area is protected to preserve its unique ecosystem. Visitors are encouraged to respect wildlife and follow guidelines to minimize their environmental impact.

Tips for Visiting Eighty Mile Beach

  • Weather: The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to September) when temperatures are more comfortable and hardly any rainfall.
  • Supplies: Bring sufficient supplies, including water, food, and fuel. The nearest supermarkets are in Port Hedland and Broome.
  • Safety: Be cautious of strong currents at some places along the beach and marine creatures when swimming. Always check tide times, especially if driving along the beach.

Eighty Mile Beach is a unique and tranquil destination, offering a great outback coastal experience. If you want to spend the night there, we recommend staying at least half a day. If you have more time then two nights is recommended so you can also go 4WD driving on this beautiful beach. You can simply park your 4WD camper on the beach and use the facilities like the fridge, cooker, chairs end awning while enjoying a couple of hours on this beach. It is a shame to skip this!!
