Availability of 4WD campers in Australia

Many travellers start planning their trip through Australia well in advance. This is particularly sensible if you intend to travel through northern Australia during the dry season, from May to September. What is not always realised is that the overall supply of rental 4WD campers in Australia is relatively limited. The total rental fleet currently consists of around 640 vehicles. Apollo and Britz alone account for approximately 360 of these, leaving roughly 280 vehicles across all other rental companies and 4WD camper models. Within this already limited supply, some models are available in only very small numbers.

In particular, 4WD campers in which you can sleep inside and which can be equipped with a toilet, such as certain Landcruiser and Hilux models, are especially popular. For travel during the dry season, these are often fully booked 8 to 10 months before departure. For some models, availability can disappear even earlier. The Hilux motorhome, for example, is currently fully booked through to the end of October 2027.

The Hilux motorhome fleet consists of just five vehicles, which, due to the level of comfort they offer, are usually booked well in advance. The Landcruiser 2 berth is also limited to a fleet of only five vehicles. For some models, the number available for hire is even smaller. There are, for example, just two Discoverer 4 Berth vehicles and three Landcruisers with an electric roof tent in the rental fleet.

If you enquire well in advance and receive a quote from us, this therefore does not automatically mean that the same camper will still be available several months later. Availability can change quickly in the meantime. With rental companies that use flexible pricing, the rental rate may also increase as the number of available vehicles decreases. There is, of course, no need to make a rushed decision. However, if a particular 4WD camper suits your travel plans well, it is advisable not to leave a quote for several months without having the availability checked again. Many travellers do not wait until they are able to book their flights, but secure their preferred 4WD camper beforehand. If the flight dates later turn out not to match exactly, the rental period can usually be adjusted free of charge, provided the rental schedule still allows for this. 

If your travel plans are confirmed, it is worth securing your preferred 4WD camper rather than waiting too long. We regularly hear from travellers who have already booked their flights, only to find that the 4WD camper they had in mind is no longer available for their travel dates.
