Different types of roof tents

Hard shell roof tent

A hard shell roof tent can generally be set up in just one to two minutes. Simply release the catches, open the tent and position the ladder. Packing it away in the morning is just as straightforward. Is is a roof tent where the top and/or bottom consists of a rigid shell, usually made from plastic, although aluminium or fibreglass is also sometimes used. When folded down, the tent looks like a large, flat case mounted on the roof of the vehicle. Most roof tents of this type open with the help of gas struts. All you need to do is release the latches, after which the tent opens automatically.

Soft shell roof top tent

Setting up a soft shell roof tent usually takes around 10–12 minutes. Once you are familiar with the process and have developed a routine, this can often be reduced to 5–7 minutes. Most of the set-up time is spent removing the protective pvc-cover, unfolding the tent using the ladder, adjusting and securing the ladder, and fitting the spring poles that support the small awnings above the windows and entrance. A soft shell roof tent is made from canvas. While driving, it remains folded on the roof of the vehicle and is protected by a durable cover. At the campsite, the tent needs to be unfolded and set up manually.

Electric roof tent

An electric roof tent is quick and easy to set up. At the press of a button, the tent opens automatically and is fully erected, including its surrounding awnings, in around 30 seconds. Packing it away is just as simple and takes approximately the same amount of time. An electric roof tent is stored inside a hard shell and opens vertically at the touch of a button. There is therefore no need to unfold or set up the tent manually. When opened, the roof rises straight upwards, creating the same amount of height throughout the sleeping area.
