Travel in Australia with children

If you plan to take your children on a travel across Australia, feel free to contact us. We have travelled the continent alongside our children various times, with them varying in age between 11 months to 15 years. Our kids have roamed Australia by car-tent combination, campervan, motorhome, 4WD bushcamper and by a 4WD car with an off-road camper trailer, all throughout periods ranging from 6 weeks to half a year.

Except the northern part of the Cape York Peninsula, we have taken our children across all states: areas that include south-west Tasmania, the Kimberley, Pilbara, Kangaroo Island, Far North Queensland, the Great Central Road, Outback NSW, along the Gulf Track, Plenty Highway, the Eyre Peninsula, through the Tanami Road, Red Center, Top End, countless National Parks, etc. Some areas/routes even warranted multiple visits. We can therefore state that we boast some experience when it comes to travelling with children. The (south)-east and south-west of Australia are especially perfect for a family holiday.

Nearly all children enjoy to travel, and they are not ones to complain about returning there a second time. Australia has plenty on offer for our small fellow travellers, and that makes nearly any holiday with children such a success. Things that come to mind are the child-friendly campsites, the vast beaches, the many playgrounds you will come across, the rich diversity in birds, kangaroo spotting, possums, koalas, etc. Staying at a National Park campground is also a guaranteed hit for children, where they can enjoy ample room to play. It only adds to their fun when the campground allows camp fires to be lit.

Planning is important: if you take 25 days to travel from Darwin to Perth (or in opposite direction), this might bide on your children's time a bit too much because of the many hours they will inevitably spend in a car or camper. Their holiday experience, and yours, is bound to suffer because of that. Another frequent travel schedule is the 28 to 30 day trip for the vast Cairns-Adelaide route, which does not even come close to covering it in our view. Parents often pursue their own travel dreams and hardly consider the kids when planning their route. So take your time!
